A local driver's tip for this trip
Nobody should do Manali to Leh in a single day, whatever the online quote says. Sleeping at Sarchu at 4,250 m without a Jispa night beforehand is the single most common cause of acute mountain sickness on this route.

Manali Leh Tour Package — questions travellers ask us
How much does a Manali to Leh taxi cost?
₹46,000 one-way for a Scorpio-class SUV and ₹54,000 for an Innova Crysta, covering the three-day crossing with fuel, driver allowance, night halts, permits and the return deadhead for the driver. Split between four or five people it's comparable to flying once you count baggage.
When does the Manali Leh highway open?
BRO usually clears it between mid-May and early June and it stays open until the first serious October snow. Exact dates change every year — we track the BRO bulletins and will tell you honestly if your dates are marginal.
Can Manali to Leh be done in one day?
Physically, yes, in about 17 hours. Medically, it's a bad idea. You'd go from 2,050 m to 3,500 m in a single push over five passes above 4,800 m. We refuse single-day crossings — the three-day plan with a Jispa night is the safe version.
Is oxygen available in the vehicle?
Yes. Every vehicle on this route carries portable oxygen canisters and a pulse oximeter, and the driver knows the descent points and the Army medical posts at Sarchu and Pang.
Where is the last petrol pump before Leh?
Tandi, just past Keylong — after that it's 365 km to Karu near Leh. Our drivers fill at Tandi and carry a sealed spare can, which is standard practice on this highway.
Is the Manali Leh road dangerous?
It's high, remote and unpaved in places, with water crossings at Zing Zing Bar and Pang that swell in the afternoon. Driven by an experienced hill driver in the morning hours, it's manageable. Driven fast or late, it isn't.
What should we pack for the Manali Leh drive?
Warm layers even in July, a windproof, sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, plenty of water, dry snacks, any prescription medication and Diamox if your doctor recommends it. There are no pharmacies between Keylong and Leh.
Can you do the return Leh to Manali trip too?
Yes, and we also run the Leh–Srinagar direction and the Nubra and Pangong extensions with Ladakh-registered partners. Tell us your full Ladakh plan and we'll quote the whole loop.
Is there mobile network on the highway?
Only postpaid connections work in Ladakh, and even those are patchy. Expect no signal between Keylong and Upshi. Our drivers carry satellite-independent contact protocols with the control room via checkposts.
Can families with children do this route?
We advise against it for children under 10 and for anyone with heart or lung conditions. For older kids and healthy adults it's fine with the three-day pacing, plenty of water and no alcohol on the highway.
