Snow driving in Himachal — how we keep winter trips safe
Is a taxi safe in Himachal during snowfall?
Yes, when the vehicle and driver are prepared. The main highways to Shimla and Manali are cleared within hours of snowfall, and our drivers carry snow chains when snow is forecast. The real risks are black ice on shaded morning bends and high passes like Rohtang and Jalori, which simply close. We check the road status on the morning of your trip and adjust timing or route if needed.
What actually happens on a snowfall day
- Road crews clear the national highways (Chandigarh–Shimla, Chandigarh–Manali) first; tourist traffic usually moves again within hours.
- Police may hold traffic at checkpoints like Solan, Sundernagar or Kullu until the road ahead is confirmed clear.
- If the highway is held, the driver waits at a safe point rather than pushing through — arrival time moves, safety does not.
- Fresh snow on the final climb (Narkanda, Kufri, Solang, Sissu) is where chains go on.
Black ice — the real winter hazard
The most dangerous winter surface is not snow but black ice: a thin, invisible layer on shaded bends, bridges and north-facing stretches, worst between about 6 am and 9 am. Our drivers handle it by starting a little later on frosty days, keeping speeds low on shaded sections, and avoiding sudden braking. This is also why we do not push pre-dawn departures in deep winter.
Which roads close and which stay open
- Closed all winter: Rohtang Pass, Sach Pass, Chanshal Pass, Manali–Kaza (Kunzum) road.
- Close after each snowfall, reopen in hours to a day: Jalori Pass, Hatu Peak road, Chail–Kufri links, higher Kinnaur and Lahaul stretches.
- Rarely closed for long: Chandigarh–Shimla and Chandigarh–Manali national highways, Atal Tunnel (checked daily).
How we prepare your car
- Snow chains carried whenever the forecast shows snow on your route.
- Antifreeze-checked coolant, winter-grade diesel where needed, and a full tank before the hill section.
- Driver confirms the day's road status with our local network before pickup.
- If conditions are genuinely unsafe, we tell you and re-plan — we do not run trips we would not put our own family in.
What you can do
- Keep buffer time on snowfall days, especially for flights and trains on the return.
- Wear shoes with grip — icy parking lots cause more tourist injuries than cars do.
- Carry sunglasses; snow glare at altitude is strong even on cloudy days.
- Share your live location with family once in the hills; network gaps are normal.
Season by season on the main winter routes

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to drive to Manali or Shimla in snow?
Yes, with the right vehicle and driver. The main highways (Chandigarh–Shimla, Chandigarh–Manali) are cleared quickly after snowfall, but black ice forms on shaded bends in the early morning. Our drivers run these routes all winter and carry chains when snow is forecast.
Do your cars have snow chains?
Yes. When snow is forecast on your route, the driver carries snow chains and fits them where needed. On heavy snow days we may suggest a later start so road crews can clear the highway first.
Which roads close first in heavy snow?
High passes and ridge roads close first: Rohtang (shut all winter), Jalori Pass, Chanshal Pass, Sach Pass and the Manali–Kaza road. The Chandigarh–Shimla and Chandigarh–Manali national highways reopen fastest, usually within hours of snowfall stopping.
Sedan or SUV for a winter Himachal trip?
For Shimla and Manali on the main highways, a sedan is fine in normal winter conditions. If your plan includes fresh snowfall, higher villages like Narkanda, Kalpa or Sissu, or travel right after a storm, take an SUV for the extra clearance and grip.
What should I carry for a winter road trip?
Warm layers, gloves, waterproof shoes, sunglasses (snow glare is strong), any regular medicines, a power bank, and some snacks and water in case of a weather hold-up. Keep your phone charged — the driver coordinates route updates on WhatsApp.
