Road conditions
What the NH-3 (Chandigarh–Manali) is like right now
Honest notes from the drivers running this sector this season.
Road quality
Good — four-lane as far as Bhuntar, then a busy two-lane orchard road that threads through every market town in the valley.
Hairpin bends
Roughly 130 tight bends on this run. Motion-sickness prone travellers should take the front seat and skip a heavy breakfast.
Night driving
We avoid running the upper section after dark. Departures are timed so the climb finishes in daylight.
Monsoon advisory
Kullu, Bhuntar and Manali market jams add real time in season — an hour lost here is common and we plan for it July and August need a buffer day on either side of a fixed plan.
Snow advisory
Occasional January–February ice on shaded bends. Chain-fitted tyres are standard on our winter cars.
Vehicle recommendation
SUV is what we send by default on this sector, based on gradient, road width and luggage space.

Local guide
Delhi to Manali taxi: a local driver's full guide
The Delhi to Manali taxi run covers 575 km on the NH-3 (Chandigarh–Manali). The map says 575 km; the road says 12.5 hrs (usually split over 2 days), because 47 km/h is as fast as this alignment sensibly allows. Manali sits 1,834 m above Delhi, so the last stretch is continuous first- and second-gear climbing. The drive climbs to about 2,050 m on continuous gradients with long stretches of two-lane hill road. Expect blind hairpins, seasonal landslide patches during the monsoon and slow overtaking behind trucks — the clock is set by the terrain, not the distance. The Beas valley narrows as you go up: four-lane to Bhuntar, then two-lane orchard road with apple crates stacked at every turn. Winter mornings can bring black ice on the shaded bends, so December to February departures leave after sunrise. We put an SUV on this run — the gradients heat up brakes fast and the patched sections punish soft suspension. Manali is known for Himachal's single biggest tourist market and the base for Rohtang, Solang and Lahaul.
Delhi to Manali by taxi: the honest version
+
A one-way cab from Delhi to Manali means 575 km via the NH-3 (Chandigarh–Manali) and about 12.5 hrs (usually split over 2 days) behind the wheel. Everything on this page — timing, fares, halts, road condition — comes from drivers who run this alignment week after week, not from a generic distance table.
Expect an all-in average near 47 km/h. The drive climbs to about 2,050 m on continuous gradients with long stretches of two-lane hill road. Expect blind hairpins, seasonal landslide patches during the monsoon and slow overtaking behind trucks — the clock is set by the terrain, not the distance.
Elevation matters as much as distance here. Delhi sits at 216 m and Manali at 2,050 m, a net gain of 1,834 m. That climb does not arrive evenly — it stacks up in the last third, which is why the final stretch feels far longer than its share of the kilometres.
More from our route desk: the Bhuntar Airport–Manali route, and the Dharamshala–Manali route.
Delhi to Manali distance by road and realistic drive time
+
The road distance is 575 km. Straight-line distance is considerably less, and that gap is the whole story of driving in Himachal: the road follows rivers and contours rather than going where you want it to. Anyone quoting you a much shorter figure is measuring on a map, not on tarmac.
Broken into thirds, the first 192 km out of Delhi is the easiest running of the day, the middle 192 km is where the character of the route changes, and the final 192 km into Manali is the slowest — expect the last third to eat close to 313 minutes more than its share of the distance suggests.
Departure time changes the drive more than driving style does. Leaving Delhi at 6 a.m. gets you into Manali around 7:15 p.m.; leave at 11 a.m. and the same 575 km can take an extra hour purely because of when you hit the busy sections.

Road condition on the NH-3 (Chandigarh–Manali)
+
Leaving Delhi you are on four-lane expressway with service roads, flyovers and toll plazas roughly every 40–60 km. The only genuine risk is fatigue and lane-changing trucks; we keep departures early so the plains section is done before the afternoon build-up.
Closer to Manali the road becomes four-lane as far as Bhuntar, then a busy two-lane orchard road that threads through every market town in the valley. Kullu, Bhuntar and Manali market jams add real time in season — an hour lost here is common and we plan for it.
There is no high pass on this route, which makes it one of the more dependable corridors in the region. Delays here come from roadworks, market traffic and monsoon slope-clearance rather than from closures.
Surface quality changes year to year as widening work moves along the corridor. We would rather tell you about a rough 15 km stretch in advance than have you discover it at 2 a.m. on a night transfer — so if there is active blasting, a diversion or a broken section on your travel date, your driver flags it when confirming the pickup.
Travellers on this page also check: road condition on Chandigarh to Solang Valley, the Manali–Solang Valley road, and other Kullu drives.
Delhi to Manali taxi fare and per-km rates
+
One-way fares on this route are ₹21,900 for a sedan, ₹25,600 for an SUV and ₹31,700 for a 12/17-seater Tempo Traveller. Across 575 km that works out to roughly ₹38 per km in a sedan and ₹45 per km in an SUV — all-inclusive figures, not a base rate with extras waiting at the end.
Included: fuel, driver allowance (bhatta), all tolls and state taxes, GST, and the hill surcharge that applies to gradient-heavy sectors. Not included: parking at the destination, entry fees to protected or restricted zones, anything you ask the driver to detour for, and overnight stay charges on multi-day hires — each of which is quoted openly before you confirm.
Multi-day hires are quoted per day with a daily kilometre allowance rather than as a stack of point-to-point fares, which almost always works out lower for sightseeing itineraries around Manali.
Fares on this page come from the same live pricing engine used for every Himachal Tour and Taxi booking, so seasonal rate changes show up here rather than going stale. The number you are quoted on WhatsApp is the number you pay — we would rather lose a booking on the quote than argue about it at the destination.

Which vehicle to book for this route
+
We recommend an SUV (Ertiga, Innova or equivalent) at ₹25,600 on this route. The gradients heat brakes and the patched sections punish soft suspension, so the extra clearance and stronger braking earn their cost. Sedans run this route at ₹21,900 in fair weather only.
Groups of seven or more travel in a Tempo Traveller at ₹31,700, available in 12- and 17-seat layouts. On hill routes the larger body means slower cornering and wider turning circles, so a Tempo takes a little longer than the car figures on this page — we quote the honest, slower time rather than the car time.
Whatever the class, the vehicles we put on Manali runs are checked for brakes, tyre depth and lights before a hill sector, and in snow season for chains. That is standard for us and worth asking of anyone you book with, here or elsewhere.

Where the car stops: halts, food and washrooms
+
On a 12.5 hrs (usually split over 2 days) run we plan 3 halts, and where they fall is not random. The first is a highway food plaza where the car can be topped up and tyres checked before the hills; later comes a Beas-side stop where the river noise drowns the highway and the trout is fresh.
Food along the way means parathas, chole bhature and filter coffee at the big highway dhabas — clean washrooms are the real reason we stop where we stop. Nearer Manali it shifts to riverside trout, siddu with ghee, and Manali's café strip at the top of the valley.
Washrooms decide halts as much as food does, especially with children or elderly passengers in the car. Our drivers keep a mental list of which stops on this corridor are actually usable and which look fine from the road — that list is the sort of thing you only build by driving the route dozens of times.
If you want a specific detour or photo stop, ask at the start rather than mid-drive. On this alignment a detour that sounds like ten minutes can be forty once you count the climb back onto the main road.
Also worth reading: halts on Kangra Airport (Gaggal) to Manali, and where the car stops on Amb Andaura Railway Station to Manali.
Best time to travel to Manali
+
The dependable window is All year, with the monsoon (July–August) the only slow window. Open all year; the valley floor rarely closes, but the side roads to Solang and Rohtang do.
Manali at 2,050 m does see snow in January and February. The road stays open, but expect slower running, occasional one-way traffic control on the last climb, and shaded bends that hold black ice until mid-morning. Winter departures on this route leave after sunrise for exactly that reason.
Peak weekends and long holiday weekends add real time to this drive, sometimes an hour or more of queueing alone. If your dates are flexible, a mid-week departure is the single cheapest upgrade available to you.

Your driver: hill experience on this specific sector
+
Hill driving is a separate skill from highway driving, and the difference shows in the small things — where a driver positions the car on a blind hairpin, how early they read an oncoming bus, whether they use engine braking on a long descent instead of cooking the pads. Every driver we send onto the Delhi–Manali sector has run it before; we do not use a route page to sell a driver's first attempt at it.
Drivers on this corridor are local to the region, which matters practically: they know Kullu, Bhuntar and Manali market jams add real time in season — an hour lost here is common and we plan for it, they know which halts have working washrooms, and they know who to call when a slope-clearance crew is holding traffic. They also speak the local language at checkposts and markets, which quietly removes friction you would otherwise be paying for in time.
Driver documents — licence, badge, vehicle papers, permit — are verified before a car is assigned, and the driver's name and number reach you before pickup rather than at the last minute. On overnight and multi-day hires we plan the halts around driver rest, because a tired driver on hill roads is a bigger risk than any road condition on this route.

Permits, checkposts and paperwork
+
No restricted-area permit is required on the Delhi–Manali route for Indian nationals. Carry a photo ID all the same — checkposts in Kullu log vehicle and passenger details from time to time, and foreign nationals should carry passport and visa copies.
Himachal also runs a green tax / entry formality for vehicles coming in from outside the state, plus congestion and entry restrictions in a few towns. Those are handled by us and already included in the fare, so they never turn up as a surprise line at the end of the trip.
Restricted-area rules in Himachal genuinely change — Rohtang caps, Spiti and Kinnaur Inner Line requirements and local seasonal orders are all revised without much warning. We check current rules for your travel date rather than relying on what was true last season, and if a rule has changed in a way that affects your plan, you hear it from us first.
Related on this corridor: Rohtang Pass to Manali permit route.
What to carry on this drive
+
Temperature on this route drops as you climb, and Manali at 2,050 m can be noticeably colder than your departure point even in summer — nights especially. Carry one layer more than the forecast suggests; nobody has ever regretted the extra fleece in the car.
Practical kit for this sector: ID copies for everyone, any prescription medicines in hand luggage rather than the boot, motion-sickness tablets if hairpins bother you, a power bank, and cash. Card and UPI coverage is good in the towns and unreliable in between, so a few thousand in cash removes a lot of small friction.
In snow season add waterproof shoes with grip, gloves and a warm cap. Cars go out chain-equipped, but standing in slush at a traffic hold in canvas shoes is a miserable way to spend forty minutes.
Travellers on this page also check: what to carry for Manali.
Suggested plan for the day
+
At 12.5 hrs (usually split over 2 days) of driving, Delhi to Manali is a long single day and an honest operator will say so. We run it two ways: a pre-dawn start with a two-driver plan, or a planned overnight halt that turns a punishing day into two comfortable ones. Where we suggest the halt, the stay charge is shown in the quote up front rather than appearing later.
A workable shape for the day: leave Delhi early, take the first halt after the initial stretch is behind you, eat before the slow section rather than during it, and keep the last hour clear of any hard commitments. Arrival times in the hills are estimates, and the plans that survive contact with this road are the ones with slack built in.
Most travellers on this sector also book their local sightseeing and the return leg with the same driver. It is cheaper than fresh point-to-point fares, and by day two the driver knows the group — where you want to stop, how often, and how early you are actually willing to start.
Compare with: Pathankot Railway Station to Manali in a day, and planning Kalka to Manali.
Taxi vs bus vs self-drive on Delhi to Manali
+
Buses run this corridor and they are cheap, which is a real argument. What they cost you is control: fixed halts, fixed timings, luggage handling at every change, and the last-mile problem at Manali, where the bus stand is rarely where you are actually staying. For two travellers on a tight budget the bus wins; from three passengers upward, a private cab at ₹21,900 is usually comparable per head and hours better on comfort.
Self-drive is the choice most people regret on hill sectors specifically. Blind hairpins, oncoming buses claiming the middle of the road and long descents on unfamiliar brakes make it far more tiring than the distance suggests. Add the cost of the rental, fuel, tolls and parking hassles at the destination and the gap to a chauffeur-driven cab narrows sharply.
A private taxi buys three things on this route: door-to-door pickup, the ability to stop where you want, and a driver who has done the sector before. On 575 km of hill road, that third one is the one you actually pay for.

Local notes for Manali
+
Manali is known for Himachal's single biggest tourist market and the base for Rohtang, Solang and Lahaul. Most visitors arriving by cab underestimate how much of it sits away from the main road, which is where having the car and driver for a second day tends to pay off.
Food here means riverside trout, siddu with ghee, and Manali's café strip at the top of the valley. Ask your driver where they eat rather than following the largest signboard; the answer is generally cheaper and better.
Two practical local details: parking in the older parts of Manali is tight, so the last hundred metres to a guesthouse is sometimes on foot with bags, and phone coverage varies sharply by operator in Kullu. Both are easier when the driver knows the town, which is the quiet argument for booking locally rather than sending a car up from the plains.
Compare with: things to do around Manali, Manali on a second day, and hiring a cab in Manali.
Booking a Delhi to Manali cab
+
Booking runs on WhatsApp because it is the fastest way to get you a real, fixed number from a person who knows the route. Tap the button on this page and the message arrives pre-filled with your trip details — Delhi to Manali, your date and time, passenger count and any special request — so Paras can reply with the final fare instead of asking you six questions first. Replies usually take minutes, not hours.
We confirm four things before you pay anything: the exact fare and what it includes, the vehicle class going out, the pickup time, and the driver's name and number. A small advance locks your car and driver for the date; the balance goes to the driver at the end of the trip, and everything is stated openly at quote time.
Changes happen and we plan for them. Flight delays, a hotel that moved the check-in, weather on the pass — tell us as early as you can and we adjust. The one thing we will not do is send a car onto a road our own driver thinks is unsafe on the day, whatever it costs us in a cancelled booking.

Why travellers book this route with Himachal Tour and Taxi
+
Fixed, transparent pricing: the ₹21,900 sedan fare on this page is the all-in number, with fuel, driver allowance, tolls, taxes and hill surcharge already inside it. No fuel top-ups mid-route, no "the road was bad" adjustment at the destination.
Local operation: we are based in Himachal, our drivers live in these valleys, and the two people answering your WhatsApp — Kartik and Paras — have run and driven these roads themselves. When you ask whether the Delhi–Manali road is fine this week, the answer comes from someone who spoke to a driver on it yesterday.
Verified drivers and tracked vehicles: documents checked before assignment, GPS tracking on the trip, and support available at any hour on the number you already have. That combination is what turns a 575 km drive into a hill journey you actually enjoy.

Season by season
Spring (Mar–Apr)
Clear, dry roads; occasional late snow on upper stretches.
Tip: Carry a light jacket; mornings are cold.
Summer (May–Jun)
Peak traffic; expect slow movement near town entries on weekends.
Tip: Start before 6 am to beat the queues.
Monsoon (Jul–Sep)
Landslide-prone patches; short closures are possible after heavy rain.
Tip: Keep a buffer of a few hours and check with your driver the night before.
Autumn (Oct–Nov)
Best driving conditions — dry roads, clear views.
Tip: Ideal time for photography stops.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
Manali town is usually reachable; snow can close roads beyond Manali (Solang, Atal Tunnel).
Tip: Ask us for a 4x4 or chains if snow is forecast.
Local driver notes for Manali
Kullu district is the Beas valley: Bhuntar airport, Kullu town, Kasol and the Parvati valley, then Manali and the Atal Tunnel toward Lahaul. The Kiratpur–Manali four-lane has cut the drive from the plains, but valley roads still need patience.
- Delhi / Chandigarh – Manali (NH-3 via Kiratpur, Mandi): Four-lane and tunnels most of the way to Mandi; the Mandi–Kullu stretch along the Beas is the slowest section, especially in the monsoon.
- Manali – Solang – Atal Tunnel – Sissu: Open most of the year subject to snow clearance; local taxi rules apply for some stretches, which our Manali drivers handle.
- Manali – Rohtang Pass: Seasonal, usually summer to autumn; needs an online permit with daily vehicle limits and is closed on Tuesdays for maintenance.
Best time to travel
- Spring (March–April): Days 12–20 °C in Manali, snow lingers higher up. Atal Tunnel open after clearance; Rohtang still closed.
- Summer (May–June): Peak season, 15–25 °C. Long queues to Solang and Atal Tunnel; leave Manali before 7 am. Rohtang usually opens in this window.
- Monsoon (July–mid September): Heavy rain in the lower valley. Beas-side slips between Mandi and Kullu can cause delays; we track advisories before departure.
- Winter (December–February): Snow in Manali and Solang, sub-zero nights. Beyond Solang may shut after heavy snow; 4x4 or snow chains sometimes required past Palchan.

Delhi to Manali — questions travellers ask
How far is Manali from Delhi by road?
Yes. The NH-3 (Chandigarh–Manali) connects the two directly over roughly 575 km, taking about 12.5 hrs (usually split over 2 days) with normal halts. Your driver may pick a shorter local link near Manali depending on market traffic.
What is the cab fare from Delhi to Manali?
Sedan ₹21,900, SUV ₹25,600 and Tempo Traveller ₹31,700 one way, all-inclusive of fuel, driver allowance, tolls and taxes for the full 575 km. Round trips and multi-day hires are quoted per day on the same rate card — nothing is added at the end of the trip.
Do I need a permit for the Delhi–Manali route?
No permit is required on this route for Indian nationals, and no restricted-area formalities apply. Carry a photo ID — checkposts in Kullu sometimes log vehicle and passenger details.
Which vehicle is best for this route?
We recommend the SUV (₹25,600) — the gradients and surface patches punish low-clearance cars. Sedans are allowed at ₹21,900 in dry season only; large groups take a Tempo Traveller at ₹31,700.
Is the Manali road affected by snow?
The road stays open, but Manali at 2,050 m does get snowfall in January and February. Expect slower running and occasional one-way traffic control on the last climb; the route is rarely closed for more than a few hours.
Is Delhi to Manali doable in one day?
At 12.5 hrs (usually split over 2 days) of driving it is a long single day. We either start before dawn with a two-driver plan, or break the journey at a highway halt — with the night-halt charge shown up front in your quote.
What is the best time to travel from Delhi to Manali?
All year, with the monsoon (July–August) the only slow window is the window we recommend for this sector. In practice, open all year; the valley floor rarely closes, but the side roads to Solang and Rohtang do. If your dates fall outside that, the trip still runs — we just change the departure time and the vehicle rather than the promise.
How rough is the drive to Manali?
The corridor is four-lane as far as Bhuntar, then a busy two-lane orchard road that threads through every market town in the valley. Kullu, Bhuntar and Manali market jams add real time in season — an hour lost here is common and we plan for it. Surface quality changes after every monsoon and every winter, so your driver checks the current status of the NH-3 (Chandigarh–Manali) the morning you travel.
Are food and washroom stops included on this route?
We plan three halts on a 12.5 hrs (usually split over 2 days) run, chosen for working washrooms as much as for food — typically a Beas-side stop where the river noise drowns the highway and the trout is fresh. Expect riverside trout, siddu with ghee, and Manali's café strip at the top of the valley. Halts are yours to move: tell the driver at pickup if you want to eat somewhere specific or push straight through.
Can the fare change after booking?
The quoted fare is fixed for the 575 km and includes fuel, driver allowance, tolls and taxes. It only moves if you change the trip — extra pickups, added sightseeing, a night halt, or waiting beyond the free window. Peak-season and one-way return-empty charges, where they apply, are shown before you confirm on WhatsApp.
