Kullu road conditions & weather guide
Last reviewed 8 October 2026 by the Himachal Tour and Taxi route desk. Seasonal patterns only — we confirm live road status on WhatsApp before every trip.
Kullu district is the Beas valley: Bhuntar airport, Kullu town, Kasol and the Parvati valley, then Manali and the Atal Tunnel toward Lahaul. The Kiratpur–Manali four-lane has cut the drive from the plains, but valley roads still need patience.
Main roads and what to expect
- Delhi / Chandigarh – Manali (NH-3 via Kiratpur, Mandi)
Four-lane and tunnels most of the way to Mandi; the Mandi–Kullu stretch along the Beas is the slowest section, especially in the monsoon.
- Manali – Solang – Atal Tunnel – Sissu
Open most of the year subject to snow clearance; local taxi rules apply for some stretches, which our Manali drivers handle.
- Manali – Rohtang Pass
Seasonal, usually summer to autumn; needs an online permit with daily vehicle limits and is closed on Tuesdays for maintenance.
- Bhuntar – Kasol – Manikaran
Narrow single-lane in places along the Parvati; allow 1.5–2 hours.
Weather and roads by season
| Season | Weather | Roads |
|---|---|---|
| Spring March–April | Days 12–20 °C in Manali, snow lingers higher up. | Atal Tunnel open after clearance; Rohtang still closed. |
| Summer May–June | Peak season, 15–25 °C. | Long queues to Solang and Atal Tunnel; leave Manali before 7 am. Rohtang usually opens in this window. |
| Monsoon July–mid September | Heavy rain in the lower valley. | Beas-side slips between Mandi and Kullu can cause delays; we track advisories before departure. |
| Winter December–February | Snow in Manali and Solang, sub-zero nights. | Beyond Solang may shut after heavy snow; 4x4 or snow chains sometimes required past Palchan. |
Driver tips
- Rohtang permits are limited daily — tell us your date early so the driver can apply.
- Overnight Volvo arrivals land around 6–8 am at the Manali bus stand; book the local cab for that slot.
Who wrote this and how we checked it
Kartik & Paras — Himachal Tour and Taxi route desk, Himachal Pradesh. Written and fact-checked by Himachal Tour and Taxi's own route desk in Himachal Pradesh. Kartik and Paras have coordinated hill transfers across all twelve districts — Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur included — and every timing, fare and road note here is cross-checked with the drivers running that sector this season.
- Fares come from our own published per-km rates for each car type, plus tolls, state entry tax and driver stay. We confirm the final price on WhatsApp before you book.
- Travel times are what our drivers usually take on this road in normal weather. Snow, landslides and traffic jams can make trips longer.
- Before you travel, check road closures and permits with official sources: HP Police traffic updates, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) notices for high passes, and the HP Tourism permit portal for Rohtang and Atal Tunnel.
