Kinnaur Tour Package — questions travellers ask us

Do I need a permit for Kinnaur?

No permit is needed for Sarahan, Sangla, Chitkul, Kalpa or Reckong Peo. The Inner Line Permit only applies beyond Sumdo toward Spiti, which this package doesn't cross.

How much does a Kinnaur tour package cost?

Six days from Shimla starts at ₹44,500 in an SUV and ₹51,500 in an Innova Crysta, covering fuel, driver allowance, five night halts, tolls, parking and green tax.

Is Chitkul worth the drive?

Yes. It's the last inhabited village on the Baspa before the Tibet border at 3,450 m, with wooden houses, a small temple and a river meadow. Go in the morning; afternoon clouds usually roll in over the valley.

Is the Kinnaur road safe?

The Hindustan–Tibet Road is famous for its cliff sections around Nigulsari and Wangtu, and it does see rockfall in monsoon. Driven in daylight by a driver who knows the shooting-stone stretches, it's safe. We avoid this valley in peak monsoon.

When is the best time to visit Kinnaur?

April to June for clear weather and green valleys, September to November for the apple harvest and the sharpest Kinner Kailash views. December to March, Chitkul is often cut off by snow.

Can we combine Kinnaur with Spiti?

Yes — Kinnaur is the natural approach to Spiti, and our 8-day Spiti circuit does exactly that. If you're already going as far as Kalpa, adding Tabo and Kaza is only two more days of driving.

Is there snow in Kinnaur?

Kalpa and Chitkul both get heavy winter snow, and Chitkul's road often closes from January to March. For guaranteed snow with an open road, Kalpa in late December is the safer pick.

What kind of accommodation is available?

Homestays and small hotels in Sangla, Chitkul and Kalpa, plus the HPTDC properties at Sarahan and Kalpa. Rooms are simple, clean and often orchard-side; luxury hotels don't really exist in this valley.

How high is Kalpa and will altitude affect us?

Kalpa sits at about 2,960 m and Chitkul at 3,450 m. Most people feel nothing beyond mild breathlessness on the first evening. Our itinerary gains altitude over four days, which handles it.

Is Kinnaur good for families with kids?

Yes — it's one of the gentler high-Himachal circuits, with no pass above 3,500 m and short daily drives after day two. Bring warm clothes even in summer; Chitkul mornings are cold all year.
