Spiti Valley road trip guide — routes, season and taxi planning
How do I plan a Spiti Valley road trip by taxi?
Plan 7–9 days from Delhi or Chandigarh. Go up via Shimla and Kinnaur for gradual altitude gain, spend 3–4 days around Kaza, Tabo, Dhankar and Chandratal, then return via Kunzum Pass, Atal Tunnel and Manali. The Manali side is seasonal (roughly June to mid-October). Take an SUV — the Manali–Kaza road has long unpaved stretches and water crossings.
The two routes into Spiti
- Via Shimla: Chandigarh/Delhi → Shimla → Rampur → Reckong Peo → Nako → Tabo → Kaza. Open most of the year, gentler altitude gain, better for acclimatisation.
- Via Manali: Manali → Atal Tunnel → Gramphu → Chhatru → Kunzum Pass → Losar → Kaza. Shorter but seasonal, rougher, and climbs above 4,500 m quickly.
- The classic plan is a circuit: enter via Shimla, exit via Manali (or the reverse), so you never repeat a road.
When to go
The full circuit works from about June to mid-October, when Kunzum Pass is open. July–August brings monsoon risk on the Kinnaur side (landslides near Malling and Pooh). September and early October give the clearest skies. From November to May the Manali side is shut; winter Spiti trips via Shimla are possible but only for travellers prepared for extreme cold and basic stays.
Altitude and health
- Kaza sits around 3,800 m; Kunzum Pass and Chandratal are higher. Ascend gradually — the Shimla side helps.
- Keep the first day in Kaza light: no rushed sightseeing, hydrate, avoid alcohol.
- Carry any medicines your doctor advises for altitude; tell the driver immediately if anyone feels breathless or dizzy.
- Elderly travellers and young children should consult a doctor before booking.
Fuel, cash and network
- Fuel up at Kaza — the only reliable petrol pump in the valley. Carry a full tank before Chandratal.
- ATMs exist in Kaza and Reckong Peo but run out of cash; carry enough for the whole valley stay.
- Mobile network is patchy beyond Reckong Peo; Kaza has limited connectivity. Download offline maps before leaving Shimla or Manali.
Vehicle and driver
We send SUVs with drivers who run the Spiti circuit every season. Ground clearance matters on the Manali side, and an experienced driver knows which water crossings to take early in the morning when levels are low. Share your dates and group size on WhatsApp and we will quote the full circuit with the driver's stay and allowances included.
Season by season on the Spiti circuit roads

| Season | Roads | Driver tip |
|---|---|---|

| Summer May–Jun | Peak traffic; expect slow movement near town entries on weekends. | Start before 6 am to beat the queues. |
| Monsoon Jul–Sep | Landslide-prone patches; short closures are possible after heavy rain. | Keep a buffer of a few hours and check with your driver the night before. |
| Autumn Oct–Nov | Best driving conditions — dry roads, clear views. | Ideal time for photography stops. |

Frequently asked questions
When is Spiti Valley open for a road trip?
The Manali–Kaza road over Kunzum Pass is seasonal, usually open from about June to mid-October. The Shimla–Kinnaur–Kaza side stays open longer but can close after heavy snow. Exact opening dates change every year, so we confirm the current status on WhatsApp before you book.
Do I need a permit for Spiti Valley?
Indian travellers do not need a permit for Spiti's main circuit (Kaza, Tabo, Key Monastery, Chandratal). Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for some border stretches, which is arranged in Reckong Peo or Kaza.
Which route is better — via Manali or via Shimla?
Most travellers go up via Shimla (gradual altitude gain, easier acclimatisation) and return via Manali over Kunzum Pass and Atal Tunnel. Doing the full circuit avoids backtracking on the same road.
Is a sedan OK for Spiti?
We recommend an SUV for Spiti. The Manali–Kaza stretch has long unpaved sections, water crossings and rough patches where ground clearance matters. A sedan can manage the Shimla side in good weather but is not advised for the full circuit.
How many days do I need for Spiti?
A comfortable circuit from Chandigarh or Delhi needs 7–9 days: two driving days each way plus 3–4 days around Kaza, Tabo, Dhankar, Pin Valley and Chandratal. Shorter trips mean very long driving days at high altitude.
