Morning at Chitkul, afternoon transfer to Kalpa for the Kinner Kailash face. Deliberately short so your body catches up.

Through Pooh, Nako lake and Sumdo where the inner-line permit is checked. Landscape turns from apple green to cold desert in one afternoon.

Drive Shimla → Spiti → Manali, never the reverse. Coming up from Manali dumps you at 4,590 m on Kunzum within hours of leaving 2,000 m, and that is where altitude sickness on this circuit almost always starts.

How much does a Spiti Valley tour package cost?
The 8-day Shimla–Kaza–Manali circuit starts at ₹78,000 for a 4x4 SUV and ₹86,000 for an Innova Crysta, covering fuel, driver allowance, all night halts, permits, tolls and green tax for the whole circuit. Split across four to six people it works out far cheaper than a bundled group tour.
Do I need an inner line permit for Spiti?
Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the stretch between Sumdo and Kaza when entering from the Kinnaur side; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. We arrange the paperwork with your ID copies before departure — carry the originals for the checkpost.
When is Spiti Valley open?
The Kinnaur side is open all year up to Kaza, weather permitting. The Kunzum La–Chandratal–Manali crossing usually opens mid-June and closes with the first heavy October snow. Outside that window we run Spiti as an in-and-out trip from Shimla.
Is Spiti safe with children or older parents?
It can be, with pacing. Our itinerary gains altitude over four days rather than two, we carry oxygen and an oximeter, and we can insert an extra night at Kalpa or Tabo. We do not recommend it for anyone with uncontrolled heart or respiratory conditions.
Do I need a 4x4 for Spiti?
For the main circuit a high-clearance SUV is enough. For Chandratal's approach track, the Pin valley and any late-season stream crossings, a 4x4 is genuinely necessary — we quote it that way rather than sending an unsuitable car.
How do you handle altitude sickness on the circuit?
Slow gain, hydration, a no-alcohol first three days, and short driving days above 3,500 m. Every vehicle carries oxygen and a pulse oximeter, and the driver knows the descent routes from Kaza if anyone needs to lose altitude fast.
Is there mobile network in Spiti?
Only BSNL and Jio work reliably, and mainly around Kaza, Tabo and Kalpa. Chandratal has no signal. Download offline maps and tell family you'll be out of contact for a day or two — our drivers carry the control-room numbers.
Can we do Spiti in fewer than 8 days?
A 6-day Shimla–Kaza–Shimla version exists and we run it, but it skips Chandratal and squeezes acclimatisation. If you only have six days we'd rather run the shorter loop safely than compress the full circuit.
What is the fuel situation in Spiti?
The last reliable pumps before Kaza are at Reckong Peo and Powari, and Kaza itself has the world's highest retail outlet. Our drivers plan the tank around them and carry a spare jerry can on the Kunzum leg.
Where do you stay on the Spiti circuit?
Homestays and small guesthouses in Sangla, Kalpa, Tabo and Kaza, and a fixed camp at Chandratal. Stays aren't included in our fare, but we book the same properties we'd send our own families to and share direct rates.
