Shimla road conditions & weather guide

Shimla district climbs from the Kalka–Shimla corridor to apple country around Narkanda, Kotkhai and Rohru. Most visitors arrive via the four-lane NH-5 from Chandigarh, then branch east along the Hindustan–Tibet Road toward Kinnaur.
Main roads and what to expect
- Chandigarh – Shimla (NH-5)
Four-lane most of the way to Shoghi; usually 3–4 hours. Weekend afternoons back up near Dharampur and Shoghi.
- Shimla – Kufri – Narkanda
Two-lane and scenic; the first stretch to see snow in winter, so Kufri and Narkanda can slow to a crawl on snowy weekends.
- Shimla town
Mall Road and the Ridge are pedestrian zones; taxis drop at the lift or Victory Tunnel and hotels in restricted roads need permits.
Weather and roads by season
| Season | Weather | Roads |
|---|---|---|
| Spring March–April | Pleasant 15–22 °C days, cold nights. | Clear roads; good time for Narkanda and Chail day trips. |
| Summer May–June | Peak season, 20–28 °C. | Heavy tourist traffic on NH-5 and in town; start before 7 am on Fridays. |
| Monsoon July–mid September | Frequent rain and fog. | Slips near Koti, Solan bypass and on the Rohru road; we add buffer and avoid night runs. |
| Winter December–February | Snowfall likely at Kufri and Narkanda, occasionally Shimla town. | Kufri–Narkanda may shut briefly after fresh snow until cleared; SUVs and early starts recommended. |
Driver tips
- Book the return before weekends — Sunday evening NH-5 is the slowest drive of the week.
- For Mall Road hotels, share the hotel name so the driver plans the nearest legal drop point.
Who wrote this and how we checked it
Kartik & Paras — Himachal Tour and Taxi route desk, Himachal Pradesh. Written and fact-checked by Himachal Tour and Taxi's own route desk in Himachal Pradesh. Kartik and Paras have coordinated hill transfers across all twelve districts — Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur included — and every timing, fare and road note here is cross-checked with the drivers running that sector this season.
- Fares come from our own published per-km rates for each car type, plus tolls, state entry tax and driver stay. We confirm the final price on WhatsApp before you book.
- Travel times are what our drivers usually take on this road in normal weather. Snow, landslides and traffic jams can make trips longer.
- Before you travel, check road closures and permits with official sources: HP Police traffic updates, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) notices for high passes, and the HP Tourism permit portal for Rohtang and Atal Tunnel.
