Solan district covers the first hills out of the plains: Kasauli, Barog, Chail and Solan on the Kalka–Shimla corridor.
Main roads and what to expect
- Kalka – Solan (NH-5)
Four-lane, about 1 hour from Chandigarh.
- Dharampur – Kasauli
Narrow climb; Kasauli town restricts vehicles near the cantonment.
Weather and roads by season
| Season | Weather | Roads |
|---|---|---|
| Spring March–April | Mild days around 20–28 °C, cool evenings. | Dry roads, easy driving and light traffic outside festival weekends. |
| Summer May–June | Hot in the valleys, often above 35 °C at lower towns. | Heavy plains traffic on weekends; start early to beat heat and queues. |
| Monsoon July–mid September | Heavy rain spells, humid and misty. | Landslips and potholes on link roads; drivers allow buffer time and avoid night driving. |
| Autumn & winter October–February | Clear skies; winter nights near freezing in higher villages, fog in low valleys. | Best driving months; early-morning fog can slow the plains approach. |
Driver tips
- Kasauli is an easy day trip from Chandigarh.
- Weekend evenings on NH-5 near Parwanoo are slow.
Who wrote this and how we checked it
Kartik & Paras — Himachal Tour and Taxi route desk, Himachal Pradesh. Written and fact-checked by Himachal Tour and Taxi's own route desk in Himachal Pradesh. Kartik and Paras have coordinated hill transfers across all twelve districts — Shimla, Kullu, Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur included — and every timing, fare and road note here is cross-checked with the drivers running that sector this season.
- Fares come from our own published per-km rates for each car type, plus tolls, state entry tax and driver stay. We confirm the final price on WhatsApp before you book.
- Travel times are what our drivers usually take on this road in normal weather. Snow, landslides and traffic jams can make trips longer.
- Before you travel, check road closures and permits with official sources: HP Police traffic updates, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) notices for high passes, and the HP Tourism permit portal for Rohtang and Atal Tunnel.
