Broken into thirds, the first 68 km out of Koksar is the easiest running of the day, the middle 68 km is where the character of the route changes, and the final 68 km into Masroor is the slowest — expect the last third to eat close to 178 minutes more than its share of the distance suggests.

Plan backwards from arrival. To reach Masroor in daylight you want to be rolling out of Koksar by 9 a.m. — later than that and the last, slowest section happens in the dark.

Leaving Koksar you are on wide, treeless high-altitude road with glacier-melt channels crossing the tarmac and almost no traffic. Water crossings are ankle-deep at dawn and much deeper by mid-afternoon, so the day is planned backwards from that.
