Leaving Bir you are on broad valley-floor road with the Dhauladhar wall on one side and tea gardens on the other, tipping up only in the final climb. The last few kilometres into the upper towns are steep, narrow and parking-starved — this is where the drive actually gets technical.

A sedan (Dzire, Etios or similar) at ₹7,150 is the right call here. The surface never demands clearance, and the extra cost of an SUV buys you legroom, not safety, on this alignment. Four adults with full luggage are the point at which the SUV starts making sense.

The first is a tea-garden stop near Palampur or a Dhauladhar viewpoint where the whole ridge is in frame; later comes a deodar clearing above the river where the temperature drops several degrees in a hundred metres of altitude.

Salooni at 1,800 m does see snow in January and February. The road stays open, but expect slower running, occasional one-way traffic control on the last climb, and shaded bends that hold black ice until mid-morning. Winter departures on this route leave after sunrise for exactly that reason.
